Here's some tennis
info about the upcoming summer season.
Some good tennis viewing locally too. This information was taken
from the appropriate Websites and the Boston Globe.
1. US Open tickets are now on sale. The
tournament runs from Aug. 31-Sept. 13. Go to
www.USOpen.org,
1-866-open-tix or
www.ticketmaster.com
to get tickets. This year ESPN, Tennis Channel and CBS will
provide over 200 hours of live coverage, the most in US Open
history.
2. Wimbledon begins Monday, June 22 and runs to
July 5. For info, go to
www.Wimbledon.org. NBC, ESPN and Tennis Channel have
coverage. Tennis Channel has it on almost every night at 7 PM.
Can Roger break the record? Stay tuned.
3. Locally, the Campbell's Hall of Fame Championships
at Newport runs from July 6-12 with Monica Seles being inducted
July 11. Go to
www.TennisFame.com or 1-866-914-fame (3263) for tickets.
Taylor Dent is scheduled to play. Normally, USTA discounts apply
the first three days.
Congratulations
again to our own Peter Allen for his induction last weekend into
the New England Tennis Hall of Fame. I spoke with Peter Monday
and he stated everything went well at the induction and he was
very much honored. We have quite a few members now in the Hall.
Something for which we can all be proud as members of such a
great club.
4. The Champions Tour stops in Newport, Aug.
20-23. Scheduled to play are Jim Courier, Pat Cash, Todd
Martin, Mats Wilander and Mark Philippousis. Go to the same
above website and phone # for tickets.
5. The Boston Lobsters season begins in early
July. Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams are scheduled to
play but not each other on different nights. All home matches
are held at the Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton, MA just off
Rte 95 on Rte 1. I've been there and it's a great outdoor venue
for watching tennis. It's just under an hour from Framingham.
Allow enough time during rush hour as most matches start at 7
PM. For tickets and info, go to
www.Bostonlobsters.net.
6. For all you golfers, tickets for the Deutsche Bank
Championships at TPC Boston in Norton go on sale June 19. Go to
www.dbchampionship.com or call 877-tix-4dbc or order tickets
at any Stop and Shop. Tournament week runs from Sept.1-Sept. 7
(Labor Day).
7. In one week, the Globe had articles on a 14 year old tennis
phenom and a 100 year old pretty good tennis player. According
to the Globe, Regis Philbin was expected to announce a
challenge match with the latter player. Tennis is truly, now
more than ever, a game for the ages. Click on
the story of the century for a phenomenal article on a
phenomenal man.
8. Mark your calendars for our annual End of the Year Party,
Sept. 30, always a great time.
